New Head of the Department of Political Science
Signe Pihl-Thingvad will become head of the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences. She will take over from Nina Græger, who has been head of the department since 2019.

On 1 June 2025 the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen will have a new head: Signe Pihl-Thingvad, who was previously the head of the Department of Political Science and Public Management at the University of Southern Denmark. Signe therefore has extensive experience leading research and teaching environments.
Signe Pihl-Thingvad has a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Copenhagen and a PhD in Political Science from SDU. Among other research interests, Signe has focused on university management, self-leadership and psycho-social work environment. She has been the head of the Department of Political Science and Public Management at SDU for the past five years, and before that she was the head of the research section for Public Administration.
'I believe that strong research and teaching environments are built on a foundation of academic and pedagogical freedom which allows the most talented researchers and lecturers to pursue original ideas. I therefore look forward to working with all the staff at the Department of Political Science to set a strategic course and provide a strong and attractive environment, so that it is possible to provide both research and teaching of the highest quality,' says Signe Pihl-Thingvad.
Dean Vibeke Jenny Koushede says that the hiring committee focused on Signe Pihl-Thingvad’s vast experience and inclusive management style:
'Signe brings with her a strong research-based understanding of management and work environment, and it is clear that she is passionate about both. As the head of the Department of Political Science and Public Management at SDU, Signe focused on supporting research groups and developing talent, especially among younger researchers. In addition, she has an impressive track record of securing external funding. Signe has a keen eye for organisations and a welcoming and inclusive management style, and I am delighted to welcome her – back – to the Faculty of Social Sciences.'
Signe Pihl-Thingvad will take over from Nina Græger, who as of 1 July will take up the position of director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). 'I would like to thank Nina for her great investment in her work as head of department and for the collaboration that we have had. I wish her all the best in Oslo,' says Vibeke Jenny Koushede.
