Caroline Bertram is a PhD Fellow at the University of Copenhagen. Her research stands at the intersection between the research fields of European Politics, Foreign Policy Analysis, and International Political Economy (IPE). Her research dives into the possibilities and limitations of using trade policy to foster (non-economic) foreign policy objectives. In particular, her research focuses on the development of social and environmental sustainability issues in the European Union's (EU) trade policy, such as labour, environmental and climate protection.

The PhD project aims to strengthen our conceptual and empirical understanding of the link between trade and foreign policy, with a specific focus on the policies of the EU. It hopes to contribute to our understanding of how the EU’s external policies are evolving in the context of globalization and the 21st-century international political economy, and in the context of the emerging global sustainability agenda.

At the university, Caroline is a member of the Centre for European Politics (CEP); the International Relations (IR) Research Group; and the Climate Research Group (REGROUP).

Teaching

In the autumn of 2020, Caroline is part of the teaching team on the master's specialization 'Theory and Practice in Foreign Policy' with professor MSO Anders Wivel and professor Martin Marcussen, where she has taught three lessons on 'Foreign Economic Policy'.

In the spring of 2021, Caroline will supervise master's theses and in the autumn of 2021 teach on the undergraduate course 'International Relations 1'. 

Caroline has previous working experience as a teaching assistant on the bachelor's course 'International Relations', which she taught in the autumn of 2018.
