Krogerup debates the future of Europe. The battle of values in Europe - should we accept, understand or fight?

Activity: Talk or presentation typesLecture and oral contribution

Regitze Helene Rohlfing Frederiksen - Invited speaker

As part of the Conference on the Future of Europe, Krogerup Højskole, in collaboration with New Europe, opens the doors to an exciting debate evening:

The value struggle in Europe - should we accept, understand or fight?

Do we have common values in Europe, or is it something created by some in order to make others conform? This is a question that many are asking themselves after the explosion of violent ideological and value divisions in Europe, between Western Europe in particular and parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Within the individual member states, most countries are divided on values policy. But should we agree on the fundamental values? What value battles are unfolding right now? Which are the biggest value struggles in today's EU? Do we all need to be democratic countries with independent legal systems? And should we accept that countries have different starting points and understandings of values, should we understand why the struggle is in Europe right now, or should we fight for these values to be fully respected by all Member States?

Regitze Helene Rohlfing is a PhD student at the Department of Political Science (Centre for European Politics) and iCourts at the Faculty of Law. Her research is in the field between political science and law with a focus on how civil society can mobilize against and influence democratic development in Central and Eastern Europe, and how interaction with the EU - both the political and legal framework - can influence this. Thus, Regitz's research focuses on various relevant aspects of democratic theory, civil society and social movements, and European courts and legal integration. The project is both empirically and theoretically driven in that it explores and discusses how to define and conceptualise the relationship between civil society and democratic development based on how this plays out in Hungary and Poland.
Anna Courbin is a second year political science student, former Krogerup student and part of New Europe Youth. Anna has debated the future of Europe with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Chancellor Angela Merkel, but she is driven by change from below and particularly supports activists in Europe who are under pressure from their governments, such as Polish women.

This autumn's nationwide events on the EU are part of the 'Denmark Debates Europe's Future' initiative, supported by the Europa Board and a collaboration between the Europa Board, the DEO, the European Movement, New Europe and the People's Movement Against the EU, in cooperation with local partners.
