  • Sune Lægaard
The subject of the present PhD thesis is nationalism and multiculturalism under conditions of immigration to established liberal nation-states. Liberal nationalism is understood as based on a concern with stability of liberal political ideals, and is discussed in relation to issues of immigration, i.e. the granting of residence and citizenship. The thesis also considers whether appeals to "national values" in political debate may be a form of nationalism, and whether recent Danish immigration legislation is nationalist. With respect to multiculturalism, the structure of multiculturalist theories of recognition are discussed, and it is argued that such a theory might be based on liberal principles. The thesis also considers the Danish "headscarves affair" in relation to issues of nationalism and discrimination.
