Dorte Sindbjerg Martinsen

Primary fields of research

Dorte Sindbjerg Martinsen is professor at Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. She holds a higher doctorate from University of Copenhagen (2015) and a Ph.D. (2004) from the European University Institute in Florence, where she in 2004 defended her PhD concerning political and legal dynamics regarding coordination of social security for migrant workers, i.e. Regulation 1408/71 (now 883/2004).

After the PhD, Martinsen came to the department in 2004. Her research focuses in particular on EU integration of welfare policies, including healthcare, the dynamics between law and politics in the EU, implementation, enforcement and compliance with EU policies. Martinsen's more recent publications count the book (2015) with Oxford University Press An Ever More Powerful Court? The Political Constraints of Legal Integration in the European Union, which compares political responses to the legal integration of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) within the social policy area - theoretically and empirically.Martinsen concludes that the influence of the Court on policy outputs is considerably more conditioned by politics than conventional work on law and politics tends to argue. The book was awarded the EUSA best book prize 2015/2016, May 2017, in Miami.

For reviews of the book, see European Journal of International LawWest European Politics, Journal of European Social Policy and EUSA review of books. The book's data for CJEU jurisprudence 1961-2014 as well as the book's annex 2, annex 3 and annex 4 are available here and under publications.

At Department of Political Science Martinsen is part of the Centre for European Politics. Together with Susanne K. Schmidt (Bremen University), Gareth Davies (University of Amsterdam) and  Michael Blauberger (University of Salzburg) Martinsen has been granted a Norface grant as part of the joint programme Welfare State Futures from January 2015 to January 2018 to examine recent political and legal dynamics concerning the free movement of persons and welfare; with the project Transjudfare.

Together with Ellen Mastenbroek (Radboud University, Nijmegen) Martinsen has received a grant from the Danish Council for Independent Research in 2017 to examine the role of European Administrative Networks in EU implementation and enforcement. The research project will initiate autumn 2017 and run till 2021.
